This Local Chapter aims to amplify the World Economic Forum global initiatives via supporting relevant South African projects and ensure engagements of the South African business community to drive and accelerate impact on the ground.  Imperial and Risk Insights have chosen three initial initiatives “Step up to a Green Start Up”, “Unjani Clinics NPC” and “SA Trails Network” for the World Economic Forum New Champions Community Local Chapter South Africa, which are focused on critical issues in the country: Health and Wellbeing, Education, Gender Equality, Innovation, Sustainable Infrastructure and Climate Action -

STEP UP TO A GREEN START UP

Step Up 2 A Start Up national youth entrepreneurship development programme was launched in 2014 with the aim of creating a culture and mindset of entrepreneurship in South African youth.  Research has shown, that by exposing youth to entrepreneurship, we can equip them to become job creators, contributors to the economy and give them the skills they need to uplift themselves from poverty.

The programme focuses on making youth aware of climate change, encouraging them to accept environmental responsibility and teaching them how to identify entrepreneurial opportunities in the green circular economy. It is both a theoretical and practical based project, including a national youth entrepreneurship challenge (competition), business model adjudication, pitching and allows the winners to gain recognition through the awards. Since inception, it has benefitted over 90,000 youth and 3,000 teachers from over 1,200 schools in low-income communities. The aim is to exponentially increase this impact to promote confidence, leadership and transformation.
